Online Gaming Bill Gets Cabinet Approval: Betting Apps to Face Strict Regulations

The Union Cabinet has cleared the Online Gaming Bill, a major step toward regulating online gaming and curbing illegal betting activities in India. The new law is designed to bring online gaming platforms under a structured legal system while also imposing tough penalties on gambling carried out through digital apps.

Key Highlights of the Online Gaming Bill

  • ✅ Establishes a legal framework for online gaming platforms
  • ✅ Introduces penalties and punishments for gambling via digital apps
  • ✅ Over 1,400 illegal betting websites blocked since 2022
  • ✅ Aims to protect users from fraud, financial loss, and gaming addiction

Why This Bill Matters

The government has been steadily tightening rules around online gaming. In October 2023, a 28% GST was introduced on gaming, and from FY 2024–25, winnings are taxed at 30%. Offshore platforms have also been included under the tax bracket, ensuring that even international operators comply with Indian regulations.

Officials say these steps are meant to create a safer digital environment and protect citizens, especially the youth, from the risks of unregulated betting.

Legal & Criminal Provisions

With the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita coming into force, unauthorised betting now carries jail terms of up to seven years along with heavy fines. While the central law creates a uniform framework, it’s important to note that betting and gambling remain under the State List of the Constitution, meaning state governments still hold primary responsibility to act against illegal operators.

Efforts Against Addiction & Misleading Ads

Apart from penalties, the government is also working to tackle addiction. The Education Ministry has advised schools and parents to be vigilant about excessive gaming, while the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has directed media outlets to add disclaimer warnings in gaming-related advertisements.

The Bigger Picture

Since 2022, authorities have already blocked more than 1,400 betting and gambling apps and websites. By introducing the Online Gaming Bill, the government hopes to make online gaming in India safe, accountable, and responsible, balancing entertainment with user protection.
